Darn, you took a good name, I saw that movie too..

I highly approve! Can't wait to hear how it works out. What prop(s) you have in mind for the .074...? From what I've seen so far the 6.3x4 APC would be a great test and trim prop, gobs of blade area and static pull, and moves along smartly. But other props should offer more top speed.

My go-to prop for the .074 is the APC 7x3, but I thought I'd start with the MA 6x4 since I have several of them on hand. I also have a bunch of APC 4.75x4.75's, though I've never run one on an .074. Suggestions welcome.

rcguy, that is just way too cool! I love the 1/2A stuff but I haven't built one in years. However, I still fly some when I go to Louisiana and fly my brother's Sykosis.

CP, speaking of Sykosis, my brother is starting another harebrained scheme. He's building a twin fuselage, F-82 style Sykosis! It'll be powered by 2 Norvel .074's and based on the plan he enlarged slightly for a single .074. His slight size up and power up was very kind to the plane, wing loading was lower than what the original plans cited and it's an absolute joy to fly. I'll keep you informed when it happens.

So back to the topic of speed, I didn't even know that Jett made a .50 LX. Man, I've been on cloud nine all day. This new gem and a friendly offer are going to make for a fast Demon.

PylonRacer, yep, those are the revs he told me to expect from the .50 LX. Woo Hoo!

And I couldn't help but chuckle when Dubb told me that the BSE engines could be polished to a jewelry quality. I've never felt the need but you know, that just might be fun and sure would be factored into the voting for Model Of The Month!

Dubb is just the coolest guy to talk with. He is ultimately personable and just wants to help everybody with every detail of going fast.

6-4 could be good too. My motive for suggesting that prop was specifically that I was hoping you would avoid using a 7-3 due to its popularity as a go-to prop for the .074.. IMHO this is the opposite of a good application for the 7-3.

It's not really a good application for the .074, either, as it's not really a high-winder. I'm using it simply because I have so many of them. That and the fact that they run so well.

Well, here it is. Covering and finishing was much lighter than I expected. It came in at just under 10.25 oz., RTF. This is the lightest RC airplane I've ever built, I think. The Norvel will make 16-18 oz. of thrust, so it should be a rocket ship. Is Ed Roth still around, Chuck? I still remember his "Rat Fink" from when I was a kid. Fun stuff.

A bit of weight-savings could still be had, I think. I used an Orange Fasst 8ch receiver, which are a bit large and I used a standard Futaba switch. The root ribs are 1/8" lite ply, which might be overkill. LE and TE sheeting are 1x1/16" balsa. Ribs are 3/32" balsa. Motor mount is 1/4" lite ply, fuel-proofed with 3 coats Balsarite. Boy, has that stuff gotten expensive! Fin is 1/8" balsa. Servos are Hextronic 9g. For now, the throttle will be wired-open, though I may install a servo later on, should it survive long enough.

Maybe, but 10.25 oz ain't so bad! Put the right prop on the .074 and you'll scoot along jest fine.

Looks great..!
This is a good use of a .074 for some crowd pleasing fun.
As light as it is, you could rig up a rudder if you ever get curious and it would still be a spectacular performer.
The great Ed Roth is dead and his bio is worth a look. He was just a Regular Joe in the beginning working on crazy ideas in his driveway. He put his sons on sanding duty, too....which is about 90% of what his hobby was about.

He was up here at the Canadian Streetrod Nationals back maybe 15 years ago or whatever. He brought his latest creation which was a three wheeled thing I think. They would not let him in with it. Lots of flack over that. Pretty much a legend. I had one of his T shirts with a Bantam or Model a hot rod and the big furry hand on the shifter above the car. I always wore that to the car shows when I had my Bantam hotrod. I grew out of the Tshirt :-) Oh yes, I have a furry hand too.

I have used the black carbon APC 4.75x4.75 would be worth trying.. But the engine has a rpm wall so to speak.
During testing with a APC 5x3 to see what it can put out 23,210 static clearly a low enough load to let it run the rpm up.
I think the engine has the potential to hit 100 mph with the APC 5.25x6.25 if not then 4.75x5.5 will be another worthy prop to let it breath a bit cooler. 5x5 yet another have to keep the pitch up above a 4.
Some estimates:
6.25P if at 20k unloaded 118mph
5.5P / 21.5k / 112 mph
4.75P / 23.2k / 105 mph

Another thing you could do if you don't mind extra noise is run it with just a header pipe still can tap for pressure.
The muffler is rather restrictive the header will let it unload further yet still dulls the sound and diverts the goo in one steady direction. Shown with a TD .09 spinner, 4mm round hex head and a APC 5x3

Is the fuel-draw adequate when running open-face exhaust? (suction) Or does it need some kind of pressure?

Norvels have a large venturi and work best using pressure if not a bladder would be an option.
They do just fine on the bench with no pressure but in the end up in the air running
around you will want a good steady fuel flow. Of course if the tank is in the sweet
spot and the feed line is short you may get away with it with a tad rich setting.

The Norvel .074 is robust and is one of the best in its class the TD .09 would be a step up.
Your lil delta is going to haul arse and may really allow some unloading above expectations.

I have been testing a Vertigo .07 on a tuned pipe 35.5in span plane 140sq. in. 16.5oz
5x5E / 20.43k / 120w/ 16.1oz static / 24.94k / 118.1 mph
4.75x4.75EC / 22.86k / 134w / 16.7oz static / 26.64k / 119.84 mph

Looks like I'm stuck with the stock muffler, then. That's OK, I'm not looking to go "high tech". Never heard of a Vertigo before. Car engines tend to be a PITA to set up for airplanes. Not sure if I'd want the hassle.

If no throttle servo, I'd do the first flight with very little fuel. Good luck! Looks great.

I have one of those. Carbon fiber tuned pipe, 8.8x9 APC on 15% = 19,600. too much fun. Dub can build some serious power out of a block of aluminum.

I was talking with my brother in Louisiana a little bit ago about my new Jett .50 LX BSE FIRE that is destined for a Screamin Demon. He hasn't seen it yet but he's seen my other BSEs and knows what they look like. I told him that when Dub and I were discussing the engine and I said BSE, he suggested that I take it to a buffing wheel so it would "gleam like jewelry". Yeah, well, that would pretty much be lost inside the cowl.

So mon frere says "You've got a vacuum forming setup. Why not pull a cowl from clear plastic so it's streamlined for speed and everybody can still see the goodies inside?"

Hahahahahaha, nobody but my bro!

Not practical but what an idea.

It kind of looks like a chess piece.
Jett makes enough different size engines to make up the back row and OS .15s could be used as pawns.....

It would be nice if they would make a .10 size version.

He made an .03 for UAV work. Unobtanium, price tags don't exist long enough.
